European Commission RP3 targets, controller fatigue management and potential consolidation of services as part of the recent Airspace Architecture Study (AAS) were three of the main topics discussed by participants at the FAB CE social dialogue forum in Prague on May 9.
The FAB CE CEO Committee (CEOC) meeting in Madrid in March 2019 agreed a number of important airspace design improvement studies and related technical programmes to ensure airspace users can further optimise their trajectories through FAB CE airspace over the coming years.
Small air navigation service providers (ANSPs) can raise performance by merging airspace, however there is a turning point where decreasing returns of scale appear, according to an analysis of functional airspace bloc (FAB) performance by university academics in Spain and Germany.

The South East Common Sky Initiative Free Route Airspace (SECSI FRA) with FAB CE ANSPs Austro Control, BHANSA, Croatia Control and Slovenia Control together with SMATSA has won this year’s Single European Sky Award in the category network performance. This is a major success for the project and a recognition for the significant progress being made.
FAB CE will have a major presence at this year’s World ATM Congress in Madrid (12-14 March).
